Life throws a lot at us daily, which causes us to feel overly emotional or run down. If this becomes a constant feeling, then it can be symptoms from a multitude of things. Our Bounce Backs contain another mushroom powerhouse, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum). We talked about how these supplements also help with muscle recovery, but they have more than one benefit. We’re big fans of this fan-shaped fungus for its magical ability to balance both our immune system and hormone levels while also detoxifying the liver.

Beneficial Factors

Stress sucks, there’s no way around it. However, Reishi is an adaptogen. These little fighters deal with the adverse effects of stress like increased inflammation, low energy, and various hormonal imbalances. This immune modulator can also act as a shield to protect and positively impact the endocrine system, which encompasses the glands that are responsible for the production of hormones. The endocrine system has a direct impact on metabolism, growth, sleep, mood, and sexual function.

This disease-fighting mushroom can also protect against oxidative stress. This type of stress comes from free radicals, which can cause chronic inflammation. We use an extract in our daily mushroom blend, which is known to be a more effective way of getting your dose of antioxidants. These antioxidant abilities allow them to strengthen the body’s defenses against cancer, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, allergies, and infections. The aging process may slow down too, making its nickname “the mushroom of immortality,” rather fitting.

Reishi mushroom spores promote liver cell regeneration in mice, improving the organ’s ability to shuttle toxins out of the body. It also helps out the kidneys, keeping everything running smoothly and detoxed from most viruses.

How is this one mushroom able to do so much healing? There are a few active ingredients such as complex sugars known as beta-glucans, plant sterols that act as precursors to hormones in the body. Other components such as polysaccharides that fight cancer cell development, and acidic substances called triterpenes can also be found within this specific mushroom.

Let’s Get Historical

In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s believed that Reishi ‘nourishes the spirit,’ which in turn nourishes the body as well. Around 200–250 C.E., the Divine Farmer’s Classic of Pharmaceutics said the following:

’Chi Zhi (Ganoderma rubra) is bitter and balanced. It mainly treats binding in the chest, boosts the heart qi, supplements the center, sharpens the wits, and [causes people] not to forget [i.e., improves the memory]. Protracted taking may make the body light, prevent senility, and prolong life to make one immortal….’

Hence the ‘mushroom of immortality. The Reishi mushroom has a variety of other benefits that are worth getting to know as well.

Improving your overall mood is the vibe of our New Aura daily mushroom capsules. Your overall feeling can be affected by what's going on from the inside out. If you're suffering from inflammation or haven't been able to shake that runny nose or cough for the last couple of months, you're not alone. Did you know, Almost 1 and 3 Americans suffer from some form of pain caused by inflammation, which also affects your immune system? Fear not, Chaga (inonotus obliquus) mushroom is here to reduce inflammation, act as an antiviral, and boost that immune system. This almost burnt looking fungi is the 'right hand' to Lions Mane in our New Aura blend.

Supercharged Benefits

What makes these mushrooms so unique? Chaga has one of the highest ORAC scores of any food! Why does this matter? ORAC stands for "Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity." The higher the ORAC value, the better a food's ability to protect the body from disease-causing free radicals proving it to be an excellent antiviral and source of antioxidants. Creating a jumpstart to the immune system by increasing the production of specific immune cells, including interleukin 6 (IL-6) as well as T lymphocytes. This helps regulate the immune system and makes sure that your body is fighting off any invading bacteria and viruses.

Chronic inflammation has been the root cause of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and even Alzheimer's. Not all inflammation is harmful, and not all are chronic. When inflammation is acute, it's just the body's natural defense mechanism against damaged cells, viruses, etc. Acute inflammation's overall goal is to heal the body. Chaga can reduce inflammation. For example, an animal study has shown that Chaga extract can reduce inflammation due to ulcerative colitis in animal subjects. Researchers found that the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract in the colon was due to its ability to suppress the expression of chemical mediators of inflammation.

Traditional Uses

The name "chaga" comes from the Russian for mushrooms. They've also been called "black gold." Siberian Russian Shamans called it "The Mushroom of Immortality," and the Japanese refer to it as "Diamond of the Forest." Chaga is known as one of the most potent antioxidants in the world. Known to harness the power of ancient trees like the Birch, this fungus draws its nutrients from deep within the bark. Spanning millennia, Chaga has been used to balance the body's life force or "Chi" energy, while boosting the immune system.

Don’t worry; this is not another New Years' blog talking about how to create a new and better you; because honestly, we like you and think you’re doing great. It's that time of year when the resolutions are in full swing, and the gyms busier than ever with eager individuals looking to live up to the phrase, “New Year, New Me.” Cordyceps (Cordyceps Sinensis), a rather odd, caterpillar-esque (actually also known as the caterpillar fungus) looking mushroom will gladly be your workout partner. These fungi can have shown to help significantly with workout recovery. Which is always a good thing, because when you feel better after workout chances are you’re more likely to keep it up for the long term.

Fuel And Growth:

This functional mushroom can help increase oxygen uptake, which can increase blood flow and accelerate the delivery of oxygen to working muscles. It’s also known to increase the body's production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), allowing you to work out longer by energizing your muscles. Studies have shown that cordyceps may keep bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) at bay while also promoting a healthy heart. Our favorite and by far the most important benefit would be its natural anti-inflammatory properties. Yes, some inflammation is perfectly fine, but too much can create pain and countless other health issues.

History Lesson:

Years ago, in ancient Chinese medicine, thought these mushrooms were actual worms. Since then, studies have shown that it’s something way more mind-blowing. It’s a ‘fruiting body produced by the fungus on dead caterpillars of the moth Hepilus Fabricius. The spores of C.S. mushrooms grow inside the caterpillars filling the caterpillar with filaments (hyphae). When the caterpillar dies, the fungus produces a stalked fruiting body that produces spores.’ Crazy, right?

The benefits of this mushroom had the spotlight at the National Games in 1993. The Chinese women athletes credited Cordyceps for muscle recovery, helping them set three new records that year.

With the help of this functional mushroom, you can (hopefully) turn that once ‘New Years Resolution’ into a lifelong routine thanks to faster recovery. If we started a campaign for this mushroom, our slogan would be Cordyceps for your Triceps! Would you join? Head over to our Shop tab to learn more about the other ingredients in our Bounce Backs and purchase some today.
